Listen to the latest episode of LIT NYC, featuring Henry Sapoznik, author of THE TOURIST'S GUIDE TO LOST YIDDISH NEW YORK CITY.

Henry is a Grammy-nominated musicologist and his book is about the Jewish hotel, the Yiddish theaters, and food like kishkes and knishes, which dominated the Lower East Side and East Village for decades. Harry Siegel and I had a great time getting to know Henry and you get to listen to Klezmer and Yiddish songs and ads. Plus we get into it deep on celery soda - there was no actual Dr. Brown, it's owned by Canada Dry today, and celery may or may not help your nerves.

We also talk at length about a Black cantor who toured Eastern Europe and sung in flawless Yiddish and Hebrew: Thomas LaRue Jones, raised in Newark, "the only one of his kind in the world."

LISTEN: The It Girl of the Air and Her Messy New York Marriage “George Putnam was not a nice guy. Amelia Earhart, however, was a terrific person. The thing is, you don’t get women going to the moon, which is happening, we don’t get so many of the women aviators in this world, without George Putnam, a Machiavellian narcissist who did things like fake his o...
