For 47 years, Dave Plati dedicated his life to CU Athletics, impacting generations of Buff student-athletes, coaches, and programs.

In April, Dave suffered a serious blood infection, blood clots, and a fall that led to an extended ICU stay. After overcoming incredible challenges, he is now in a rehabilitation facility and working hard to regain his strength and mobility. The road ahead includes significant expenses not covered by insurance.

Understanding the link between concussions and mental health is vital. The state of Colorado is taking that one step further and educating coaches on ways to support their athletes:

A new Colorado law will help raise awareness for the connection between concussions and mental health. Alyssa’s Act was just signed into law this week. It requires coaches to take a biennial mental health education course that covers concussion impacts, stress, depression, and su***de prevention. The law will ensure parents are informed about potential mental health changes after a concussion. The law was created in honor of Alyssa Peterson, a former Colorado youth soccer player and ski racer. During her early teenage years, her family noticed behavior changes including moodiness and withdrawal. Alyssa died by su***de in 2019 at just 13 years old. Her family later learned that concussions can increase the risk of mental health issues and su***de. Alyssa’s family, including her mom Stella Deslongchamp who serves on our Advisory Board At-Large, championed this legislation and advocated for its passing to help other families. We applaud their efforts to create meaningful change and hope this legislation inspires action in states across the country.
