We’ve been busy behind the scenes refining the upcoming 𝗛𝗣-𝟰 Hand Plane and developing the Mk. II prototype.

During early testing of the original prototype, we discovered something frustrating: removing the blade for sharpening was… well… a bit of a PITA. And that didn’t sit right with us. At Quantis Tool Works, tools should be easy, intuitive, and enjoyable to use.

So we went back to the drawing board.

The result is a unique linkage blade‑release mechanism integrated into the Mk. II prototype. With a simple motion, the mechanism releases the blade quickly and easily—making it faster to remove, sharpen, and get back to producing perfect shavings.

Because the reality is simple: a sharp blade makes a better plane. And the easier it is to sharpen, the more often woodworkers will keep it that way.

For the prototype, the linkage components are 3D‑printed in aluminum so we can rapidly iterate and refine the design. The final production linkage will be CNC machined from 6061‑T6 aluminum for strength, precision, and durability.

More refinements are underway as we continue development of the HP‑4.

It’s been a little while since our last update—we’ve been deep in the details preparing the upcoming AS-1 Kickstarter (launching March/April) and continuing development on the Mk. II prototype of the 𝗛𝗣-𝟰 Hand Plane.

One feature that truly sets the HP-4 apart is its 6061‑T6 billet aluminum tote. Rather than treating the tote as an afterthought, we approached it as a critical interface between the tool and the craftsman.

The design process started with a traditional #4 tote as a baseline. From there, we sculpted putty directly around the fingers and palm to refine the grip. That form was then translated into a 3D-printed prototype, iterated repeatedly until the ergonomics felt exactly right.

The result is a tote that balances beautiful aesthetics with a relaxed, natural grip—reducing wrist strain and fatigue during extended planing sessions.

The HP-4 is still in active development, with Mk. II refinements underway and a targeted release in late 2026, once every detail meets our standards.

Today we’re giving a closer look at one of the most important components of the upcoming 𝗛𝗣-𝟰 Hand Plane: its blade depth adjuster.

Machined from aerospace‑grade stainless steel and aluminum, the HP‑4’s adjuster features a zero‑backlash mechanism—every rotation of the k**b delivers predictable, precise blade movement. No slop. No drift. Just total control over your depth of cut.

While the photos show the Mk. I prototype adjuster, we’ve already been refining the design for Mk. II based on early testing. Our goal is simple: perfection through iteration.

The HP‑4 is still in active development, with a planned release in 2026, once it has been rigorously tested, optimized, and engineered to our exacting standards.

This weekend at Texas Woodworking Festival , we unveiled the Mk. I prototype of our 𝗛𝗣-𝟰 hand plane—our modern take on the iconic #4. While it shares the heritage, it brings fresh engineering to the bench.

⚖️ 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: At 3.2 lbs, the HP-4 is 25% lighter than a traditional #4—enough heft to carry momentum through tricky grains, yet light enough to reduce fatigue during long sessions.

🔪 𝗕𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹-𝗨𝗽 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗲: Featuring a 25° bevel-up A2 tool steel blade.

⚙️ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Zero-backlash blade adjustment; just one revolution changes the depth of cut by 0.010" (0.27mm).

We’re already iterating—Mk. II is in the works with refinements inspired by our first round of testing. While the AS-1 is our next launch, innovation never stops. The HP-4 is planned for release in mid-2026.
