Can animals with disabilities become therapy animals?

Yes, many can! 💙

A disability does not automatically prevent an animal from becoming a therapy animal. What matters most is whether the animal is healthy, comfortable, and able to enjoy visits without pain or added stress. A veterinarian helps decide whether therapy animal visits are a safe fit.

Our health standards help protect therapy animals, handlers, and the people they visit. They also help each animal participate in a way that supports their well-being.

Some of these teams are beginning their Pet Partners journey, while others are renewing their registration and continuing the work they already love. Each team has shown that they can work together with care, confidence and trust.

Team evaluations help support safe, meaningful visits. They also help ensure that each animal is comfortable, enjoys meeting new people, and can look to their handler for support.
