During this episode we are talking with another amazing female business owner, Melissa Calotis! Melissa is an entrepreneur, and she owns a hair salon in NW Portland, OR called M.Y. Hair Salon. Melissa built her business from the ground up with a mere $2000.00 in 2009, and now she currently contracts with 5 other stylists. She talks with us today about her business journey from the early days of opening her business to her current success, how she went from surviving to thriving.
Melissa shares about challenges she faced as a single mom and business owner, and how she navigated barriers related to lack of finances, expectations related to gender roles and age.
Melissa shares her journey to figure her worth and price her services and how systemic views related to gender roles tend to devalue women monetarily.
Melissa talks about the importance of mentorship and creating community in the workplace, and how she uses compassionate leadership to create a company culture that encourages open and honest communication.
As always, we are using the lens of Internal Family Systems (IFS) in our discussion. In the interview we identify “parts” that came up for Melissa as she created her business. We also talk about how those "parts" assisted her through challenges of her journey.
