PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
I wanted to wait until some of the other brands who actually choose the environment over profits made their posts before making ours.
A few weeks back we took Golden Oysters off our website — and yes, we still have plenty of boxes sitting around lol. For the last two years we’ve talked about removing them once they sold out, but after seeing brands like lead the way, we decided it was the right time to take the loss and do it now.
Here’s why: Golden Oysters can be harmful for North American ecosystems.
Even though they’re beautiful and grow insanely well, they are not native to North America. When a mushroom species grows aggressively (especially on hardwoods), it can outcompete native fungi that play an important role in local ecosystems.
Golden Oysters spread fast, fruit heavily, and can dominate the same deadwood that native oysters, turkey tail, and countless other beneficial decomposers rely on. Over time, that creates an imbalance — fewer native fungi, less biodiversity, and more pressure on the plants, insects, and microbes that depend on native fungal partners.
As growers and foragers, we have a responsibility to think beyond what’s “cool” or “viral” and choose what actually supports long-term ecological health. That’s always been part of Baltispore’s mission.
We’ll figure out something fun to do with the remaining boxes… but they won’t be grown or sold in a way that risks harming local ecosystems.
Thank you to the brands putting the planet first.
We’re proud to stand with you. 🌱🍄
