Camping in Terlingua with your dog? 🌵🐾

For our trip, we stayed at Paisano Azul Campground in Terlingua, Texas and it ended up being a convenient basecamp for exploring Big Bend National Park with Reese.

➜ Located in the heart of Terlingua, about 30 minutes from the national park entrance, so it was easy to drive into the park early for hikes and sunset views.

➜ The roads getting into the campground are desert dirt/gravel roads. We were fine in a regular vehicle, but expect dust, bumps, and uneven terrain — pretty typical for the area.

➜ We paid around $45/night for our campsite. The setup is simple and laid back, more of a rustic desert camping experience than a luxury campground.

➜ They do have showers on site, which honestly felt amazing after long hot hikes in Big Bend. Temperatures can get VERY hot during the day, especially in late spring and summer, so having access to showers was a huge plus for us.

➜ The campground is very dog friendly and Reese had plenty of space to walk around nearby. Just keep in mind it’s mostly desert roads and open desert terrain, so the ground can heat up fast during the afternoon. We found early mornings and sunset walks were the best times to get outside with her comfortably.

➜ There are porta potties available throughout the campground. We appreciated having them nearby, though we do wish they were a little more maintained during our stay since they were a bit dirty at times. Nothing trip ruining, but definitely good to set expectations if you’re planning to stay here.

➜ One of the BEST parts here is the stargazing. Very little light pollution and the night skies are unreal. If you love camping, astrophotography, or quiet desert nights, this area is incredible.

Overall, if you’re looking for a dog friendly camping spot near Big Bend and want something affordable, simple, and close to both Terlingua and the park, Paisano Azul is worth checking out.

Save this before you go to Big Bend Ranch State Park 🌵🐾

→ Hoodoos Trail is about 1 mi loop
→ Most people finish it in around 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on photo stops and exploring
→ You’ll see the famous hoodoo rock formations, Rio Grande views, desert landscape, and a vista point overlooking the badlands basically right from the parking area
→ The drive along FM 170 alone is scenic and part of the experience
→ Go EARLY before 10 am. It can get hot in the afternoon and temperatures can go over 100°F by late morning with extreme desert sun exposure
→ Best months to visit are fall through spring when temperatures are cooler
→ Bring way more water than you think you need for you and your pup, plus good hiking shoes and dog booties, there’s a part of the trail going to the hoodoos that has an uneven pavement or unpaved
→ There’s a parking area at the trailhead and usually plenty of space since it’s more remote
→ Restrooms are limited. Closes ones may be at nearby trailheads/campgrounds like Closed Canyon or Arenosa, so plan ahead
→ Entrance fee is currently $5 per adult and free for kids 12 and under

→ Bonus: this is one of the few dog-friendly trails in the area, so Reese was fully living her desert explorer dreams 🐶🧭🗺️

It’s one of the coolest landscapes we’ve ever hiked in Texas because it feels untouched, and quiet.

We took Reese at for the day while we hiked the Mist Trail up to Vernal Falls

It was not a dog-friendly hike, so this was the perfect setup for us. She got her own little adventure at the ranch, and we still got to fully enjoy the trail.

The place is genuinely beautiful, and it just feels good knowing she’s safe, happy, and having a good time while we’re out hiking. Thanks to Bry for keeping Reese safe and happy! Reese wanted to stay for some more play time when we picked her up 💛😅🐾

If you’re heading to Yosemite and need a safe spot for your pup, this is definitely it 🐾

Hey furiends 🐾 If your pawrents are visiting Big Bend National Park and planning to hike the Chisos Mountains, I highly recommend Monkey’s Dog Sitting Services in Terlingua, TX for doggy daycare 🤍

Finding a trustworthy place for pups while traveling isn’t always easy, so I’m really glad my pawrents found Carmen. She was incredibly prompt and communicative from the start and you can tell right away how passionate she is about dogs which is exactly what you hope for when leaving your pup with someone. I got lots of love, care, and a comfy place to relax and play while they hiked, and they got peace of mind knowing I was safe and happy 🐶✨

Definitely check out her page link below for booking details if you’re visiting Big Bend and need a safe place for your pup while you enjoy the trails ⛰️🐕

Life lately? Oh, it’s been good. Lots of sniffing, zoomies, and snack breaks 🍖🐾. I’ve been keeping life interesting with a little chaos, a lot of love, and enough mischief to keep humans on their toes. 😜

And if you think my sweater’s cute… thank you, it’s from 🤭💖

Thanks to all my friends for the support and for being there throughout my adventures and I hope you’re all doing well! Here’s to more snacks, hikes, and cozy naps. 🐾💛

Wishing you all a Happy Friday! ✨🐾

If you’re looking for a dog-friendly campground in New Mexico, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park in Alamogordo needs to be on your list. Full hookups, showers, fire pits, and dogs are totally welcome. Bring a cooling pad. Desert heat sneaks up fast and don’t forget to bring those frito-smelling blankies because it can get super cold at night.

The Riparian Nature Trail is perfect for dogs. It’s short, easy, and genuinely beautiful. Creek bed, historic ruins, and totally manageable in the heat. We loved it!

Go explore Alamogordo. It’s a cute little town with great dog-friendly spots to eat and explore after a trail day.

Bonus: you’re only 30 minutes from White Sands National Park which actually allows dogs in all outdoor areas. Gypsum sand stays cool on their paws, very zoomie-friendly. Just go early and bring extra water.
