The Austin Police Department is investigating after the outside of Congregation Beth Israel was vandalized with antisemitic graffiti Friday.

Congregation Beth Israel will ramp up security for the next few days with Austin Police’s assistance. APD will closely monitor the synagogue and campus.

The synagogue was vandalize with a sw****ka and the phrase “Death to Israel,” according to a statement from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Austin.

In the statement, ADL Austin wrote in part, “The targeting of Austin’s Jewish Community, or of any community, with hate is never acceptable.”

Austin City Council Member Marc Duchen acknowledged the incident in a social media post saying that the vandalism at Congregation Beth Israel is a grim reminder of the rising level of hate crimes in the city and across the nation.

This isn’t the first time Congregation Beth Israel has faced a hate crime. According to Duchen’s post, the synagogue was badly damaged after an arson attack five years ago. Last May, several Austin mosques were vandalized with spray-painted Stars of David on the buildings, according to previous coverage.

KXAN reached out to Councilmember Duchen’s office for a comment and will update this story once a comment is received.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett also went on social media to weigh in on the incident.

“Yesterday, this valued part of Austin was vandalized with antisemitic graffiti…. Such hate is never justified, whether directed at Jews, Muslims, or any other religious or ethnic groups,” Doggett wrote in the post.

The synagogue believes there is no ongoing threat to its members.

KXAN reached out to Congregation Beth Israel comment regarding the incident. We are waiting to hear back.
