The sail dagger takes its name from its distinctive guard, a sweeping forward curve in a way that visually resembles a ship's sail and quillions resembling a ships mast.

This design was not ornamental. Those extended quillons served a precise tactical purpose - trapping and binding the opponent's blade and the sail acted as a guard for the hand.
