Canopy Builders
explains some of the unique constraints we face when building in Austin’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) zones.
Austin updated the city’s WUI maps in June 2025, growing the number of residences in WUI Zones A, B, and C to more than 50% of Austin addresses. This project was in Zone C, which means it has the lowest wildfire risk of WUI zoned addresses, but we still had to take species precautions. We were allowed to use a treated lumber frame, but it had to be completely enclosed with a class A fire rated product. We could’ve used Hardie panel siding, but the client wanted continuity in the look of the deck so we carried over the Advanced PVC decking down the face as skirting.
The aluminum TimberTech Impression Rail tied in perfectly with this louvered pergola. Finished the whole thing off with a paver patio and *muah*— another Canopy Builders project complete!
