Did you know that last year roughly 5,600 Christians were murdered, more than 6,000 were imprisoned or detained, and over 4,000 were kidnapped because of their faith? These numbers come from Open Doors USA who also reports that more than 5,000 churches and other religious facilities were destroyed. Today is the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church and currently around 360 million Christians are living in countries where persecution is significant. In the US and other western nations, we are seeing larger numbers of people turning from religion and Biblical values with hostility toward Christianity increasing, but many of us have no idea how bad Christians have it in countries like Afghanistan, North Korea, Somalia, and elsewhere. Take a moment today to pray for all our Christian brothers and sisters who are living under serious persecution throughout the world. Pray for protection, strength, encouragement, and comfort. Pray that they would know God loves them and hasn’t abandoned them.
Jesus said, “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved” (Matthew 24:9-13).
