Congratulations to Senators-elect Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff on their historic campaigns and victories. Senator-elect Warnock will be Georgia’s first Black senator. Senator-elect Ossoff will be Georgia’s first Jewish senator. The people of Georgia turned out in record numbers to make their voices heard and demand change. Thank you to the organizers, poll workers, and state elections officials who worked tirelessly during a pandemic and under intense political pressure to uphold their oaths to safeguard our democracy through a free and fair election.

Congratulations to Cardinal Wilton Daniel Gregory, formerly Archbishop Gregory of Atlanta (2005-2019), for his much deserved elevation to the College of Cardinals. Cardinal Wilton Daniel Gregory is the first African-American appointed as a Cardinal in the history of the Catholic Church and is one step away from the possibility of becoming Pope.

“Through the many conversations I had with (Cardinal) Archbishop Gregory, I found him to be a very mild-mannered gentleman with a genuine love for people and the Church. His infectious smile and approachable demeanor is most noticeable. During my encounters with the then Archbishop of Atlanta, Archbishop Gregory demonstrated a high degree of humility and respect to and for those who came in contact with him. I am honored to have had opportunities to be in his presence spiritually, politically, and socially.“

This past week, I had the opportunity to speak to the great people of Clayton County for the Warnock and Ossoff campaign. All eyes are on Georgia for the January 5th run-offs. We need to do our part as civic-minded individuals and phone-bank, advocate, educate, and VOTE!

I celebrate and honor my bridge, friend, wife & helpmeet of over forty years today as she spends the first day of her retirement for the rest of her life. Pearla Abalos-Glanton has spent the last forty-two (42) years working in corporate America and earned a much deserved retirement!!! Our immediate plans include spending more quality time together, traveling the world, visiting friends around the globe, and in most cases…doing absolutely NOTHING!!!.....

She is and has been a champion for our family of five adult-children, twenty-one grandchildren and four great-grand-children as she successfully balanced her professional and personal life. She remains the spiritual foundation and intercessor of our union and family immediate and extended.

It is going to be interesting watching her attempting to adjust to her new life and new found freedoms for the first time in her adult life. She has served our country in the United States Army, retired from the Federal Government Civil Service and finally serving our State and County.

This morning was a Kodak moment as I watched her wake up at her usual time as if she was preparing to go to work…only this morning “SHE HAD NO WHERE SHE HAD TO GO”!!!

Congratulations, Baby!

I want to thank the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and staff of the Alzheimer’s Services Support Center (ASC) in Clayton County for serving as a distribution point for the USDA Food Program this past weekend. Through the efforts of the ASC, over 2,400 families throughout Clayton, Fayette, and Henry counties received food items that included meat, produce, and milk. Thousands of pounds of food products were distributed to churches, ministerial groups, and non-profits for re-distribution to families.

In addition, Representative Mike Glanton, Sr., who serves as Chairman of the Board for the ASC, and Mrs. Pearla Glanton, distributed food to individual families in Clayton, Floyd, Chattooga, and Carroll counties on Sunday. Representative Glanton is a native of Northwest Georgia (Rome, Floyd County).

As part of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue announced on April 17, USDA is exercising authority under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act to purchase and distribute agricultural products to those in need.

Through this program, USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is partnering with national, regional and local distributors, whose workforces have been significantly impacted by the closure of restaurants, hotels, and other food service businesses, to purchase up to $4.5 billion in fresh produce, dairy, and meat products from American producers of all sizes.

The program will supply boxes of fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and meat products. Distributors package these products into family-sized boxes, then transport them to food banks, community and faith-based organizations, and other non-profits serving Americans in need.

“I thank the USDA (AMS), our farmers and transportation companies for the roles they each played in this very important and needed mission. In my opinion, this is a very worthy mission that not only helps our communities and families, but also supports our farmers and distributors. What an honorable way to spend our tax payers’ dollars; helping others.”
