We had a beautiful day for the season opening of Belle Meade Fox Hunt. Wonderful clear skies and a huge crowd of riders, horses and hounds from throughout the southeast and as far away as England.

I've been out a good bit recently for birding and bird photography with the Z8 and 800mm PF. I use this combination instead of binoculars. Here are a few images from McDaniel Farm this past Saturday.

Foxhunting is a lot more equestrian sport and a lot less "hunting" than people think. The sport focuses on the chase, and a healthy fox population is important and preserved. Many days the hounds pick up a scent but the hunt never sees a fox. With Shakerag Hounds opening hunt last weekend, we were lucky enough to see a coyote - a good substitute for a fox. But the hounds quickly lost the scent and it escaped without a chase. This was with a 400mm f/4.5 lens and is cropped to about 1/4 of the frame. That's a close as I got.
