America’s social decline shows that morality is no longer seen as an essential trait in those with authority. At the nation’s founding, many of our ancestors were enslaved and worked to death. Before the United States existed, enslaved men, women, and children endured inhumane treatment and were forced to labor with inadequate food. They were often given only leftover animal parts—evidence that slaveholders barely provided nutrition fit for human consumption.
