Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is funding an independent autopsy for Demartravion “Trey” Reed, the Delta State University student found dead on campus, through Kaepernick’s “Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative.”

The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Sept. 17, ruling the cause of death as hanging and classifying it as su***de. Cleveland Police say final toxicology results are pending and could take up to four weeks. DSU Police Chief Michael Peeler adds that no evidence of foul play has been found and investigators are reviewing footage to determine what happened to the computer science major. The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office echoes that an initial exam shows no signs of attack.

Still, Reed’s family expresses serious concerns, citing conflicting accounts and incomplete information. The second independent review will move forward once the state medical examiner releases Reed’s body.
