GIFTS AND FEARS OF AGING
I promised to share with you some of the fears and gifts of getting older as expressed by women from 30 to 60 who took part in several group meetings. Consistently in each group, the most pressing concern among many 30-40 year olds was the disappointment caused by their expectation that they would be married by this time and that was not the case. This was followed closely by the realization thattheir biological clock was running out of time.
A common concern among the late 40-50 year olds was their fear that going forward they would begin to ‘look old'. This concern was surpassed only by lengthy discussions on the perils of menopause.

Another common concern of this age group was that of career
progression. What’s the best way to get that promotion, whether to change jobs or companies, and how soon would they begin to face age discrimination.

Among the 60 some-things, a common concern was a feeling of discontent with the work-place it seemed that they had been at “forever”. They longed to do something different but feared that age would be a serious handicap. Others were sure that they were ready to retire but had some concern about how soon they would be financially able to do so.
Some reluctantly shared a sense of resentment that they had spent so much of their life taking care of others. While they felt that this was their ‘responsibility’, they also felt that they had missed out on taking care of many of their own needs.

Now for the gifts of growing older. These are some of the things that participants had either experienced or were looking forward to.

• More freedom to speak your mind
• No need to wear high heels
• When children leave home and go out on their own
• No longer trying to please everyone
• The fear of growing older is replaced with gratitude
for living another day. Not everyone does!

Are any of these fears or gifts true for you?

I recently had several meetings with groups of women ranging in age from 30 something to mid 60’s. We talked about what they like about their age, what they don’t like and how they feel about growing older. We’ve closed with a discussion abou the gifts that come with aging.
There were definitely some common themes among those in the same age group, questions from those in different age groups and a bit of advice from those in their “Wisdom Years”

Before I share the results of these conversations, I’d love to know what you think. What concerns do 30, 40, 50, 60-year-old (and beyond) women have?Think of women you know in one or more category (Self, Mother, Daughter, friend) and respond from their point of view.
What is most important to each age group? What do they fear the most and what do they see as among the gifts of growing older?

I’ll give the results of the group conversations on Wednesday.
