Today, the SAW team would like to spotlight Lindsay Chen's research with the Emory University Chemistry Department!

"The vast majority of available antibiotics target very few processes in bacteria. The development of resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics threatens to undo all of the advances we have made in treating bacterial infections. Additionally, persister cells (dormant, antibiotic-tolerant cells) lead to many chronic and recurring infections. Synthetic retinoid CD437 has the ability to kill methicillin-resistant S. aureus as well as persister cells from other drug-resistant strains. They function by interacting with the phospholipid membrane of bacteria, disrupting it to induce cell death. Ana's research focuses on investigated various moieties of the retinoids to optimize their activity."
