I'm heartbroken to hear about D'Angelo's passing today at just 51. He wasn't just a voice—he was the soul of soul, the velvet fire that made my heart ache and soar every time. As someone who grew up with his music wrapping around me like a warm night, I truly believe he was the greatest male voice of my lifetime. That falsetto, those grooves... pure magic. Here's to remembering him through the highest praise from the critics and icons who crowned him king while he was blessing us. Rest in power, Michael. Your light never dims. 💔🎶

"Brown Sugar" (1995) dropped like a revelation, ushering in neo-soul and earning platinum status with critics calling it a "seminal record" that fused classic R&B with hip-hop urgency. Then came "Voodoo" (2000), hailed as a "masterpiece" and his greatest work—debuting at #1, winning Best R&B Album at the Grammys, and blending Al Green seduction with Prince-level ecstasy. And "Black Messiah" (2014)? Another triumph, snagging more Grammys and proving his perfectionism birthed timeless genius.

But the praise? It poured in like gospel. Questlove, his Soulquarians brother, once said D'Angelo's music was "one of the most impactful" of our era. Common lit up when "Lady" hit the radio, calling everyone to say, "Have you heard this?" The New York Times saw him as a "worthy successor to the greatest traditions of Black pop." RCA Records dubbed him a "peerless visionary" whose albums were "widely celebrated as masterpieces by both the music community and his beloved fans." And Rolling Stone? They knew those three albums were "groundbreaking works" earning more critical love than almost anyone in his time.

Ah, but the one that stuck forever: Legendary critic Robert Christgau, the "Dean of American Rock Critics," straight-up declared in The Village Voice (2000), "He is R&B Jesus, and I’m a believer." Even went further, calling him a better performer than Marvin Gaye himself. R&B Jesus—talk about a title that fit like a glove. D'Angelo channeled the divine, y'all.

D'Angelo, you were our untitled feeling, our brown sugar high, our black messiah. Thank you for the voodoo that healed us. Who's spinning his records tonight?
