There are many fundraising events that support breast cancer research, prevention and early detection. One of them is the Pink Ribbon Run & Fun that is hosted by the Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative (WBCI). This yearly event raises funds for breast cancer patients and to help spread breast cancer awareness. The event also offers free registration for all breast cancer survivors.
Last year, the Pink Ribbon Run & Fun had nearly 1,000 participants. It featured different activities like Zumba and yoga classes for those that did not want to walk or run. This year the event was held in August, and because of COVID-19, the organizers made the event a little different. They went virtual! The idea was basically that teams get to choose what they do and when they do it. There were a variety of exciting breast cancer awareness events like the Flock of Flamingos. All funds raised from the Pink Ribbon Run & Fun event will go directly to local Wyoming programs that increase breast cancer education, fund early detection screening, and support breast cancer survivors.

Cancer researchers continue to look for ways to fight breast cancer. Recently, they have discovered the power of combining or mixing two or more drugs. This has been found effective in combating the heterogeneous nature of tumors and has helped a significant number of breast cancer patients go into remission.
Researchers from the University of Helsinki combined a diabetes drug, Metformin and a BCL-2 protein inhibitor, Venetoclax. According to senior study investigator Juha Klefstrom, this drug cocktail “exploits specific metabolic vulnerabilities that high levels of MYC create in tumor cells.” It also killed and blocked breast tumor cells in cultures. Tests were conducted with breast cancer tissue donated by breast cancer patients, and the drug combination was shown to effectively kill breast cancer tissues. However, this treatment had to be done continuously because once it was stopped, the tumor cells were able to grow back.

Lack of knowledge about breast cancer symptoms is a major factor in the increase of cases. According to studies, one in eight women develop breast cancer without even realizing it. Early awareness and detection can save lives, and one way is through yearly mammogram screening.
Mammograms can detect breast cancer even before a woman can feel or see any symptoms. It captures digital images of the breast to quickly locate tumors that cannot be detected with a simple breast examination. It can also determine if any symptoms being experienced, like lumps or ni**le discharge, are due to breast cancer. With mammograms, patients can find out earlier if there are changes in their breasts. The U.S Department of Health and Human Services and the American College of Radiology encourage women over 40 to undergo yearly mammogram screening.
