The Race Circus Project

s are we an integrated city? What factors stand in the way of our being a more integrated nation? How do self segregation and institutional segregation intersect? In May and June of this year, we will hold various race specific and integrated dialogue sessions with and between individuals who have been a part of the Atlanta Public School System. It is our belief that the public school system is a place where many learn for the first time to interact across racial lines and that what is shared in the dialogue sessions will offer a sample that reflects many of the perspectives held by the residents of this city. Their stories and experiences will be the source material from which we create a circus performance to be shared free of charge over the course of a month in public spaces in Spring of 2016. Participants and the larger community will play a key role in the development of the pieces by guest directing, attending invited creative sessions, and showings. The showings and performances are aimed to create spaces for public group discussions about race, segregation and current relationships among diverse Atlanta residents.
