As a young child, my parents divorced. Although both my mom and dad remained actively involved in my life, it was a tough time for me as a middle schooler. I remember feeling angry and lonely much of the time. During that period, one of my dad’s friends took me fishing, and that’s where I discovered my passion for the outdoors.

For me, hunting and fishing have never been about the actual hunt or catch; they’ve always been about finding an escape—a place of solitude and peace. It’s during those moments in the woods or standing in the middle of a river that time seems to come to a complete stop, and the worries of life fade away. In those brief moments, I am able to witness God’s perfect creations and feel His immense grace and love.

I owe so much to my dad’s friend for taking the time to introduce me to fishing and hunting. Without that experience, I wouldn’t be the son, brother, friend, husband, or father I am today. It’s because of his mentorship and selflessness in sharing his passion with me that I now strive to do the same for the next generation.

This past weekend, I had the honor and privilege of taking a group of young men from Eagle Ranch Children’s Home fishing at Unicoi Outfitters. Seeing the excitement in their eyes was amazing. I hope I was able to inspire in them the same sense of confidence and peace that was once gifted to me.
