The American flag is on full display as cities across the area celebrate America’s 250th anniversary alongside the 4th of July, Independence Day.
This year, America celebrates 250 years of being a pioneer in the principles of freedom, liberty and equality. On July 2, 1776, the U.S. Congress officially declared independence from Great Britain and, on July 4, the Declaration of Independence was finalized.
In the 250 years since then, even though at times imperfect, this country has stood as a beacon for freedom and liberty, something new and unique across human history.
The Daily Post-Athenian wishes everyone a happy 4th of July.
“I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” - John Adams in a letter to his wife, Abigail, July 3, 1776.
