Joy Village

Over the last two months the Joy Village kids have had the privilege of meeting Mayor Kelly Girtz and all five of Athens’ mayoral candidates. They interviewed each candidate about their platform, took copious notes, debated the issues, and had a mock election. The verdict is in: the Joy Village kids voted for Lakeisha Gannt as our next mayor by a landslide! I don’t think social studies class gets much better than this..critical thinking, civic education, current events, and Black history in the making! Thank you to all our wonderful candidates for taking the time to invest in our students!

Our third quarter Village Night transformed our space into a Harlem Renaissance poetry cafe! The Joy Village students performed iconic works by Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Zora Neale Hurston and more, as well as original pieces that showcased their passions. The mics were on and the genius was on full blast! We were even treated to a jazzy performance by local icon . Thanks to for donating delicious food for the evening and to for donating artwork! What a night!
