Gary Lineker ended his career in Japan, where he moved after the 1992 European Championship, having previously announced that he would stop playing for the national team. Lineker spent 2 years in the Nagoya Grampus Ait club, but injuries did not allow him to play at full strength. Returning to his homeland in 1994, the famous football player received the Order of the British Empire from the hands of the Queen.

Lineker arrived in Italy, already being part of Tottenham Hotspur. Young Paul Gascoigne arrived with him. Sir Bobby Robson presented a well-prepared team to the Italians. Once in the qualifying stage in the same group with Egypt, Ireland and Holland, the British managed to get out, having two draws and one victory in their luggage. Lineker scored one goal against Ireland. But more was expected from the top scorer of the English championship.
