I am drawn to all forms of visual communication, especially ones that tell the story of the Middle East and the political turmoil we live and still endure.
“Uncertain Times” is the work of Lebanese artist and filmmaker Lamia Joreige.
Uncertain Times, is a body of work that includes the research, writing, and production of works in multiple media, is an investigation of a turning point in the history of the Middle East (1913-1920): the fall of the Ottoman Empire and overrule by the French and British mandates, in Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine in particular. The Sykes-Picot Agreement, the Balfour Declaration, the First World War, and the famine of Mount Lebanon, which caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, led to a geographic, political, and social transformation of the region, the consequences of which are still momentous today.
Following her work on the history of the Lebanese Wars (1975-1990) and the post-war period in Beirut, Lamia would like to extend her reflection on historical processes to a more distant period of our history. Her research involves historical and sociological accounts, personal diaries, photographs, maps and periodicals of the time, official correspondance, and other documents from the Ottoman period presenting different points of view and personal stories about this transition. She wishes to express the tensions and anxieties, but also the expectations felt by the population of that time, how they saw their future and what they hoped for. Translated into artistic works, these stories and fragments of history might resonate with the current changes in the region; Indeed, recent upheavals, wars, and tragic events are still tearing it apart and redefining it today as they did then. The future remains uncertain..

Then there are projects where the suffering is worth it. This project deserves a whole program on its own. In this project, I finally found my voice. This project both broke me and built my confidence. This project opened doors for and the desire to share its process. By November, I am launching my Mentorship program for select designers. I will take you on an intimate journey of self and finding your voice as a designer. There is no looking back from there!..

Many artists feel they’ll be “found out,” sooner or later_ probably sooner. For when we create, although we know that a Higher Power works with us and through us, the Work comes into the world with our name on it. This is the artist’s struggle. If we don’t create, we s***f out the Divine Spark. If we do create, we feel we’re showing a false face to the world because we know we didn’t do it alone, even if nobody else does.
But the struggle and the scam stop once we cease denying our talent and become willing to own it— humbly, gratefully, and respectfully — and then share it with the world. As Long as we’re not exploiting our gifts only for our own good, we’re covered.
Many of us squander precious natural resources — time, creative energy, emotion — comparing the size of our talents to those of others. Today ask Spirit to call forth your authentic gifts, so that you might know know them, acknowledge them, and own them. Do you want to live more abundantly? Have you buried your talents? How can we live richer, deeper, and more passionately if we aren’t willing to invest in ourselves? Many of us have played it safe for too long and wonder why we are miserable.
Playing it safe is the riskiest choice we can ever make . _ Sarah Ban Breathnach ..
