Thai Airways has raised fares by 10% to 15% as higher jet fuel costs linked to unrest in the Middle East push up operating expenses. Chief executive Chai Eamsiri said fuel prices had risen sharply and could force further increases if the situation continues.
He said advance bookings were down about 10% from the same period last year, while the airline’s board is preparing short-term measures to cut unnecessary spending and preserve cash. Investment plans may also be paused.
Despite the pressure on airlines, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand said some domestic fares will be cut by 30% during Songkran. Even so, carriers expect passenger numbers to be lower than in previous years.
