Quote by Former Warrap State Minister of General Education and Instructions Hon. Awut Mayom Agok.
“Tonj’s insecurity stems not from a lack of options but from a genuine absence of political will to address its underlying issues. I believe that the continuation of this crisis is not due to a shortage of resources. Even at the local level, Tonj has the capacity to carry out disarmament efforts and ensure the safety of its people.
We must ask ourselves: who truly benefits from the suffering of Tonj?
The core problem isn’t which sections are fighting; it's what they're fighting for or fighting over?
Who is behind their actions, and what forces are fueling the conflict?
Tonj deserves peace. Its youth deserve a future free from violence. We must prioritise compassion and courage over convenience. We have seen enough, heard enough, and experienced enough. Peace is possible and long overdue.
May the souls of all those who lost their lives during this senseless conflict rest in peace!”

14 Killed in Inter-Clan Violence in South Sudan’s Warrap State
Kuajok, July 8, 2026 – The Government of Warrap State has condemned a fresh outbreak of violence between members of the Lou Mawien and Ariik clans in Tonj North County that left at least 14 people dead and 35 others injured.
According to a press statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Communication Services on Wednesday, the clashes erupted at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, affecting Alabek and Majak payams in Tonj North County.
The statement said 13 people were killed in Tonj North, while one person died in Wau after the conflict spread beyond the initial area. Among the injured was a woman who was caught in the crossfire.
The state government, led by Governor H.E. Amb. Bol Wek Agoth, described the violence as a setback after years of efforts to resolve the long-running dispute between the Lou Mawien and Ariik clans. Authorities noted that the conflict, which dates back to January 2016, had previously been addressed through dialogue and a special court that handled hundreds of related cases.
The government alleged that some individuals within the clan may be attempting to undermine the rulings of the special court, which was established to deliver justice and promote peace in Tonj North County.
Authorities said security forces have been deployed to prevent further violence and pledged to identify and hold accountable those responsible for fueling the conflict. The government also appealed for calm and extended its condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones.
Warrap State reaffirmed its commitment to promoting unity, reconciliation, and the rule of law across the state.

Interview with Justin Mälual Bol, the Man Who Rescued an Abandoned Infant in Juba
We spoke with Justin Mälual Bol, the man who rescued an abandoned infant on the night of the incident near the Bilpham fence, where the baby had reportedly been left in a trash disposal area. We asked him about what happened.
Interviewer: Justin, we heard that you rescued an infant who had been abandoned last night. Is that true?
Justin: Yes, it’s true. I was deeply emotional when I saw the condition of the baby. I couldn’t understand why a mother would abandon such a beautiful child in a place like that. It was heartbreaking and inhumane.
Interviewer: How is the baby’s condition now?
Justin: After I found the baby, I immediately took him to the hospital. It appeared he had been born only a few hours earlier, around 6 or 7 p.m. His body was still covered in blood, the umbilical cord had not been properly cleaned, and he was crying. At the hospital, he received medical care, and I also began the necessary documentation with the relevant authorities regarding his care and possible adoption. Thankfully, the baby is now in good condition and is being well looked after.
Interviewer: Do you have a family?
Justin: Yes. I am married and work as an MI personnel. My wife gave birth to twin girls less than two months ago. When I told her about the baby, she was very happy and supportive. We have decided to welcome him into our family. Although he came into our lives under very sad circumstances, I believe God has a purpose for everything. To us, he is a blessing.
Interviewer: Many people have expressed interest in adopting the baby. What would you like to say to them?
Justin: I appreciate the concern people have shown. Ultimately, the government and the relevant authorities will determine what is in the child’s best interest. Personally, I feel blessed to have found him and I am committed to caring for him if I am allowed to do so. I do not support what happened to the child, but I also cannot judge the mother because I don’t know the circumstances she was facing. Cases like this were once very rare in South Sudanese culture, but unfortunately they seem to be becoming more common. I pray that God will bless and protect this child.
Interviewer: Besides working as an MI personnel, do you have any other occupation?
Justin: I am also a second-year student at the Catholic University. Because of my work schedule, I often work night duties. Apart from that, I don’t have any other job.
End of Interview
We commend Justin Mälual Bol for ensuring the infant received immediate medical attention and for working with the appropriate authorities regarding the child’s care.
Public Appeal
Anyone wishing to support the infant is encouraged to do so through lawful and transparent channels while respecting the decisions of the relevant child protection and government authorities. The child’s welfare and safety should remain the highest priority.
