Witness says Riek Machar directed tank distribution after Nasir attack
A prosecution witness told a special court in Juba that First Vice President Riek Machar ordered the distribution of four government military tanks to SPLA-IO forces and allied White Army militias after the March 2025 attack on the SSPDF garrison in Nasir County.
Sgt. Mayen Kuol Chan, a bodyguard to the late Lt. Gen. David Majur Dak, testified that Machar phoned Majur after the attack and directed that one tank be given to SPLA-IO and three to specific Jikany Nuer sub-clans. He said Machar also assured Majur and his guards of safe evacuation by U.N. helicopters.
Kuol told the court that on March 7, SPLA-IO commander Brig. Gen. Koang Mayom took the tanks and ordered Majur to surrender his pistol and radio. When U.N. helicopters later arrived, SPLA-IO officers carrying the wounded general allegedly dropped him and opened fire, killing Majur Dak.
Kuol said he was later captured by White Army fighters and released after his family paid a $6,000 ransom.
The case resumes on January 7 for cross-examination.
Machar and seven others face charges including murder, treason, terrorism and crimes against humanity over the Nasir attack, in which prosecutors say 257 SSPDF soldiers were killed and military equipment worth $58 million destroyed or seized.
