BREAKING: Heavy Fighting Reported in Akobo
Tension is rising in Akobo after clashes erupted Saturday morning between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army–In Opposition (SPLA-IO).
Local sources say the fighting started in Kaikuiny shortly after authorities issued a 72-hour evacuation order for civilians, humanitarian agencies, and staff of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) ahead of planned military operations in the area.
Reports indicate SSPDF troops attempted to move toward the area but were pushed back by SPLA-IO fighters, triggering intense gunfire.
