Return of Hippos Signals Wildlife Recovery in Western Equatoria

Mvolo, Western Equatoria State — The appearance of more than 40 hippopotamuses in Mvolo County is being viewed by wildlife authorities as a positive sign of ecological recovery after years of conflict in South Sudan.

Acting Director of Wildlife Conservation Brigadier General Joseph Mathew Waure said the animals are believed to have moved from the Bahr Grindi River and into nearby communities over the past week.

While the hippos have caused concern among residents by damaging crops and restricting access to farms and fishing areas, conservation officials say their growing numbers indicate that wildlife populations are gradually recovering.

Wildlife rangers have been deployed to guide the animals back to their natural habitat and reduce human-wildlife conflict.

Authorities say balancing conservation efforts with the safety and livelihoods of local communities remains a key priority
