โGreater Yirol should get worried as the only large grazing land is entirely covered by water due to expansion of sudd wetlands to the western direction.
โ
โIf the same rate of expansion of the River Nile continues, Langmatot Boma of Malek Payam, will be highly affected. The area that starts from Wunthony-Buonglษi to Makuac is a lowland which can easily flood leading to expansion of the Nile to the west.
โ
โAnd if the same flood exists in the east bank, there are high chances Twic East land will not be there in the next 10 years.
โ
โI have the privilege of knowing the entire strip along the Nile from Keriem in the north of Yirol East upto Majak of Awerial county. I was born in this place, grew up as a child until my boyhood and left in 2002.
โ
โIn the 1980's the cattle camps along the Nile were Pethuec ( where I was born), Pedi-nyiษi, Penyiriic, Rubket, Akuok etc. And by the early 1990s, the Nile expanded and encroached all these cattle camps.
โ
โIn 1994, I spent the summer in Keriem. And the immediate camps along the Nile were Lacdiing, Domjiel, Thargษi, Laath-hoth. Many of these camps submerged in water by the early 2000s.
โ
โIf Thargoi in the east is submerged in water, there are high chances that Pabot (the village of the current Commissioner of Yirol East) in the west is either threatened or likely in water by now. Someone should tell us how far the Nile is from that direction.
โ
โIn 1995-6, I spent both summer periods in Khartoum/Karthum and the Nile stopped at Limtar.
โ
โWhile in Them-bec in 1998, both Limtar and Karthum submerged in water. The only camps left along that strip were Makuac, Pagรซng, Pec-cinlรถk, Them-nyin-yaak, Rum-anei, Wunthony- Jaak, Rangbek, Gut-thom, Deeng, Majak, etc.
โ
โWhile in Leek in 2002, Wunthony-Buonglei, Wunthony Jaak and Rum-anei were both encroached by Nile in the same year and became uninhabitable.
โ
โRumours has it that Majak, Deeng and Pacuet-thok are likely to be in the middle of the Nile this year.
โ
โThe Nile is currently rumored to be in Apayรคng. So areas like Payombeek, Ribiaar, Panyangrier, Leek, Benau are already lost. It means, the entire Langthok is already in water. Big problem.
โ
โWhat are the Impacts ?
โ
โWhile the impacts may be less on the side of Awerial because of Gel, the impacts will be heavily felt by both Yirol West and East. This is the only area that can sustain large numbers of cattle from December to July during tuil-ngar.
โ
โGรถk area which is camped from August to November will no longer sustain the current number of cattle which includes Buor and Twi because of limited water and pasture.
โ
โAs Cirkou is no longer the alternative, cattle camps will be forced to look for water and pasture around Lake Anyii, Yirol, Wunthou and Pagarau.
โ
โBy this period of October or November, long term crops like kec and awuw are not yet harvested causing destruction of farmlands.
โ
โPanther and rup which can act as alternative areas to camp are already flooded for many years now. And as rain starts in March, the level of water will increase.
โ
โDue to this climate change, communities of Yirol West and East should sit down to sensitize the Communities on the types of crops to be cultivated especially short- term crops like nyindok, rapjang, cal, luwaiya.
โ
โAreas like Panebii, Panekar, Mading, Gorrioi, Agoumou, Kaap, Pagarau, Wunthou, Aluak-Luak Gedim, amethyic, Aruopnyiel should not cultivate long term crops.
โ
โ if there's someone on this street and living around Malek,, Adior, Biliing, Langmatot, kindly educate us on the level of water and how far....
