News Report:

Opposition MPs Reject R-ARCSS Amendment Bill in Juba

Juba, South Sudan, Members of Parliament aligned with the SPLM-IO in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) have strongly rejected the tabling of what they described as an “illegal Amendment Bill” to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

Speaking on behalf of the group at the Parliament premises in Juba, Honorable Chaguor Ater Bol, an MP representing Warrap State and Chairperson of the Specialized Committee on Livestock and Fisheries in the TNLA, declared that the opposition lawmakers do not recognize the proposed amendments.

According to the SPLM-IO lawmakers, the move to amend the peace agreement without broad consensus undermines the spirit and legitimacy of the R-ARCSS, the agreement that established the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU).

The MPs accused members of the SPLM-IG and allied politicians of attempting to alter the agreement unilaterally. They warned that proceeding with the amendments without the participation and approval of all signatory parties would further weaken the legitimacy of both the transitional government and President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

“Let the SPLM-IG members and their stooges amend the Agreement on their own,” the opposition lawmakers stated, arguing that such actions would strip the R-TGoNU “of any shred of legitimacy left so far.”

The development signals growing political tensions within South Sudan’s transitional institutions as debates over the implementation and future of the peace agreement continue.
