The value of any human being does not come from how much material possessions one has amassed. Nor do imaginations of power and state authority to order people around give one any value in the eyes of the people. If Adut Salva Kiir thinks she has achieved a lot just because she has an army of hungry people who go around threatening others, insulting communities left and right, or because she has used the powers of the state and her greed for wealth to control all the country’s revenue sources, and pay sycophants to defend her, she is mistaken and she will regret this.
I receive calls every day from people who tell me all kinds of shallow reasons why I should stop pointing out her ghastly behavior with regard to people’s resources. Some say I should not criticize her because we are related. Others say i shouldn’t engage with her as a young girl since I am an older man. A woman in her mid-40s is now considered a “young girl” in South Sudan? What has age got to do with anything? Others say I should spare her because we are from the same district. But this is a country we are talking about. Its not about a tribe, a community and it is not about a family. It’s about the collective welfare of all citizens, and anyone who has engaged in activities that negatively affect the country should be confronted. I don’t have any personal issues with anyone in power. But I can’t be quiet when individuals are ransacking the country, even if they are part of my family.
I know I am only an individual and I don’t have any power to hold the thieves of the state accountable. But the record must be made and maintained about the behavior of these people, so that future generations can see that there were voices of reason and people of conscience when their country was being molested!
