South Sudanese forces have arrested the petroleum minister and several senior military officials allied with vice president Riek Machar. Soldiers have been stationed around Machar's residence in Juba for the second day. Nine of his allies, including deputy army chief General Gabriel Duop Lam, are under arrest. This comes after the White Army, allied with Machar, overran an army base in northern South Sudan. Machar warned last month that firing his allies threatened the 2018 peace deal with President Salva Kiir. The arrests and military presence coincide with stalled peace talks hosted by Kenya, which are set to resume next month.

SPLM-IO says Minister of Peace Building Stephen Par Kuol arrested

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) has claimed that Minister of Peace Building Stephen Par Kuol was arrested on Thursday afternoon by the National Security Service (NSS).

According to a statement from First Vice President Riek Machar’s spokesperson, Stephen Par, who is also the Secretary General of the National Transitional Committee (NTC), was taken into custody, though the government has yet to confirm his arrest.

He is the third senior SPLM-IO official to be detained this week following violent clashes in Nasir, Upper Nile State, between South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and SPLM-IO allied militias.

Other detained officials include Minister of Petroleum Puot Kang and SPLM-IO/A military chief Gen. Duop Lam, who also serves as the SSPDF Deputy Chief of Defense Forces (CDF).

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, government spokesperson Michael Makuei confirmed the arrests of SPLM-IO officials, stating they were in “conflict with the law.”
