Njala University Distance Matriculation and Orientation Ceremony at the Freetown Waterloo Centre

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Bo Campus, Professor Rashid Ansumana, has described distance education as a strategic pillar for national development during the Distance Education Matriculation, Orientation and Certificate Presentation Ceremony held at the university’s Lunsar Centre today. The ceremony celebrated 31 graduates under the School of Basic Education and welcomed newly admitted students into the university community.
Professor Rashid Ansumana commended the graduates for their resilience and determination, noting that many balanced work, family responsibilities and academic pursuits throughout their studies. He emphasized that Njala University remains committed to expanding access to quality higher education through innovative and community-based distance learning programmes across Sierra Leone.
Speaking at the event, Paramount Chief Bai Koblo Queen the II of Marampa Chiefdom pledged land support for the expansion of the university’s centre in Lunsar and called for the establishment of a mega education centre in the township. He described education as the foundation for development and encouraged both graduates and matriculants to use education as a tool for community transformation and national progress.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Njala University’s Bo Campus, Professor Rashid Ansumana, today hosted a delegation from the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) at the DVC Conference Room to discuss strengthening peace education and institutional collaboration. The meeting focused on plans to formally inaugurate the SPSP chapter at Njala University, a move aimed at deepening academic engagement in peace and conflict studies.
During the engagement, the SPSP team shared their experience in Nigeria, where peace studies programmes are currently running in nearly 30 universities. They highlighted their work in curriculum development, student mentorship, and practical field-based learning, noting that many graduates have gone on to contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding initiatives, government programmes, and international development efforts.
Welcoming the delegation, Professor Ansumana reaffirmed Njala University’s commitment to innovation and societal impact, stressing the importance of equipping students with the skills needed to address contemporary challenges.
