20 YEARS OF REMEMBRANCE

RANGER ANARE DRAIVA

A TRUE SON OF FIJI • A HERO OF THE ROYAL IRISH

This year marks 20 years since Ranger Anare Draiva, 1 Royal Irish Regiment, was killed in action in Helmand province, Afghanistan, at 1600 local time on Friday 1 September 2006, aged just 27. Another soldier was seriously injured in the same attack and evacuated for treatment.

A proud Fijian, he hailed from Nakorovou, Kubulau, Bua, belonging to Tokatoka Tabutiva, Mataqali Buresivo, Yavusa Rewa, beloved son of Mr Seru Saumakidonu and Mrs Akesa Vakatawase. He had maternal roots in Joma, Naceva, Kadavu.

We honour his courage, sacrifice, heritage, and service with a special commemoration on 23 September 2026 at Clive Barracks.

Every penny raised goes directly toward making this tribute and all anniversary activities a fitting, lasting honour to his legacy, his people, and his home.
