Another day, another prefab company trying to lure you into the out-of-the-box home dream. This time one from Hamburg, Germany, shows off its newly completed project, a 65 combo , installed in Bielefeld, Germany.
With rounded edges (also seen in the Alupod prefab concept from Hong Kong) and sleek, contemporary fixtures, this 64 is on the larger end of the company’s offerings, which also sells modular pods as small as 100 to 170 square feet.
Inside, there’s enough room for an open living room and kitchen, with a workspace off to the side—all facing the front glass walls and porch. There’s a separate bedroom and bathroom, both with built-in storage. All Coodo dwellings are designed with passive house strategies, using mostly recyclable materials, and outfitted with smart home features like app-controlled lights and temperature monitoring.
Since the first one was installed in Switzerland in February 2015, the company has built over a dozen more around the world. They can serve as primary or secondary residences, and are offered as plain shells, fully furnished, or somewhere in between. Estimated costs are upon request.

THE EDGE MODULAR HOME | BOUTIQUE MODERN
The Edge is a distinctive modern dwelling manufactured in Great Britain. They produce modular houses that are designed with sustainability and energy-efficiency in mind. One design element that makes the Edge stand out is its exterior framework of galvanized structural steel. Boutique Modern says it was inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Farnsworth House. The steel framework gives the building the needed strength to be delivered from the factory and lifted into place, and to be relocated again if necessary. Unlike the glass-walled Farnsworth House, the Edge’s framework is filled in with a combination of solid walls interspersed with sections of floor-to-ceiling glass. The oak siding, galvanized steel and glass complement each other quite nicely for a pleasing overall appearance.
The Edge comes in two sizes, 12.3 m x 6.75 m (about 42′ x 22′) and 15.5 m x 6.75 m (about 52′ x 22′). Although factory-built, each home is built to order and can be customized by the purchaser. As none of the interior walls are load-bearing, the room layouts and window placements can be changed to suit the client and the specific conditions of the destination site. Typically the smaller version will be configured as a two-bedroom floor plan while the larger version will be used for three-bedroom plans.
The Edge shown here is the show home for Penmayne Edge Park, a small vacation home development in Rock, North Cornwall that will eventually be home to ten of the modular dwellings. As a show home, it contains a number of optional upgrades. However even the base models leave the Boutique Modern factory with a high level of finishes that include engineered hardwood flooring and in-floor heating.
Energy requirements are kept low by the use of highly-insulating structural insulated panels for the walls, floor and roof. The large south-facing windows (window size and placement is customized for the site conditions) allow for passive solar heat gain, and are triple glazed to keep the heat in at night. As a result, Boutique Modern anticipates that passive solar will provide the bulk of the heating. Supplemental heating is electric. To offset a portion of the electricity use, all Edge homes come with one kilowatt of photo-voltaic solar panels as standard equipment, and there is an option for more. Other environmentally friendly features include a rainwater collection system and an optional green roof.

Modular Intelligent Home
Project for a family in Castellón – Spain
The owners of this Smart refuge are a couple who have begun to prioritize shared time with family and friends and to enjoy nature. For years they dreamed of building a small refuge in the Serra Espadà and finally they went ahead. They used prefabricated wooden modules for a clean, quick external construction in order to ensure maximum comfort and energy efficiency. The final construction is a place to share leisure time, to enjoy the scenery and a modern house which is easily and automatically controlled from a mobile device. Its S-SE orientation maximizes thermal comfort in winter and the abundance of sunscreens also ensures summer enjoyment. The architectural design stands out for its simplicity and for a metal frame which marks out the covered areas and provides the appropriate level of design. It is an area defined to cater for all the customs and habits of the occupants, with maximum accessibility and with openings which permit a privileged view. Annexed facilities (swimming pool, barbecue, toilet and stock) complement the main building and present an array of options for fun, relaxation and enjoyment.

The construction has been designed combining two prefabricated wooden modules and a terrace which uses a metal structure designed to project the house towards the landscape.
One of the modules is for all the facilities and brings together all usable equipment, the bathroom and the kitchen. In the second module the design is optimized to provide a clear floor that leads onto the terrace and is adaptable to any purpose.
The use of local wood and insulation minimizes the CO2 footprint of the house, and the attention paid to materials selected and to the emissions from paint and other items allows it to be classified as a healthy home. Passive cooling strategies, the LED lights and dual flow ventilation system minimise the energy expenditure of the construction and ensure thermal comfort.
