Normally, a painter creates depth using value (light and dark pigments). Impasto introduces physical depth. Because the paint stands out from the canvas, it catches real-world light and casts its own physical shadows. As you walk past an impasto painting, the highlights and shadows shift dynamically depending on your viewing angle.
