In 2007, archaeologists made a fascinating find in the ancient city of Shahr-e Sukhteh, Iran, often referred to as the "Burnt City." Among the unearthed remains was a 2 meters tall woman estimated to be between 28 and 35 years old at the time of her death, with an intact artificial eye in her left eye socket. This remarkable discovery is recognized as the world's oldest known artificial eye, dating back to 2900-2800 BC.

The artificial eye found in her left eye socket was made of a light material, possibly bitumen paste, with intricate patterns and lines etched into it to simulate the iris. There were fine holes on both sides of the eye, suggesting that it was once held in place with a thread, allowing it to remain securely within the eye socket.

This unique artifact provides intriguing insights into early medical practices and craftsmanship, as well as into the societal and cultural context of ancient times. The fact that this artificial eye was carefully crafted and secured indicates a certain level of medical knowledge and a cultural inclination towards body modification or enhancement.
