When the U.S. government enacted Prohibition in 1920, it aimed to reshape society. But an unforeseen consequence emerged—an empowering new era for women.

The nationwide alcohol ban, enacted to curb social ills including domestic violence, restricted drinking across the board—but also opened new social and economic spaces for women, who had previously been excluded from saloons and the liquor trade.

Women began challenging traditional gender roles, stepping into new positions as bootleggers, entrepreneurs, and profit-makers on their own terms.
