🚨 BREAKING - A man who spent his career making Chicago's streets safer for cyclists has been doored and killed riding his bike in an unprotected Chicago bike lane.
Riley O'Neil, 35, a planner for the Chicago Department of Transportation's Complete Streets program, was riding south on Halsted Street in Bridgeport on Friday afternoon when a driver exiting a parked BMW opened a door into his path. O'Neil was thrown into traffic and struck by a semitruck. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.
Police issued the driver four citations, including unsafely opening the door and driving on a suspended license. O'Neil had helped install over 1,000 bike racks across the city and worked to redesign roads for safer cycling.
"It's a bitter irony that he lost his life on a bike," said his former professor, Joe Schwieterman. Advocates say the stretch of Halsted is a known high-crash corridor with only painted lanes.
He is at least the third cyclist killed by a driver in Chicago this year.
