The name originated in France during the 1740s, allegedly inspired by Madame de Pompadour, the mistress of King Louis XV of France, due to its resemblance to her lips. The Marquise diamond is also known as “navette” (meaning “little boat” in Old French). Its shape resembles the hull of a racing boat, reflecting the maritime passion of King Edward VII of Britain and his contemporaries in the early 20th century during the Edwardian era.
