From Hunza the main chain of the Karakoram now sweeps eastwards towards its apex and its very heart: the thundering, towering rock and ice spires of Baltistan. It is actually possible to walk to Baltistan from Hunza, over the Hispar Pass and along the Hispar and Biafo Glaciers. While Eric Shipton completed the route in 1937, exactly 50 years after Francis Younghusband, it appears to have been used for centuries by the Hunzakuts and the Baltis. For the well-acclimatised and experienced trekker, the Hispar Glacier undoubtedly provides the most direct and spectacular entry into the region.
