🪁 “Hum badal gaye… ya Basant?”

Basant used to mean more than just kites in the sky… it meant childhood on the rooftop. A house full of girls… yet a heart full of dreams to hold the dor and feel the wind pulling the kite higher. I remember learning to fly kites with my cousins Oan and Ali, who felt more like brothers, making me believe the sky was never too far.

The old ancestral home… dim window light… boring English exam next day… upstairs, a whole different world — laughter, dance, food, loud music — “Dil Hoya Bo Kata… Gadday Tay Na Charhdi… Kinnay Kinnay Jana Billo Day Kar…” — hearts that didn’t need perfection to feel complete.

Our cousin would make sure the rooftop was clear, calling us up only when it was our time. Each step on the wooden stairs felt like a small triumph — a place girls rarely climbed, made ours by our cousin, to laugh, play, and fly kites freely above the city.

Aaj shehar phir rangeen hai… magar kuch log saath nahi. Kuch rooftops khaali hain… kuch awaazein sirf yaadon mein reh gayi hain.

Dil khush bhi hai… aur halka sa udaas bhi. Some memories make my eyes teary… because I know some moments can never return.

Kabhi reels dekh kar jab dor, pinni, tandi, kanni, dhai tawa, kachap jaise words sunti hoon… toh lagta hai bachpan phir se awaaz de raha ho. For a moment… everything feels alive again.

Maybe I’m writing this because some feelings are hard to say out loud.
Kabhi kabhi lagta hai kuch yaadein sirf likhne ke liye hoti hain, kehne ke liye nahi… warna unki khamoshi toot jati hai.

Maybe someone reading this is missing a rooftop… a cousin’s laughter… a time when life felt simple and we were all together.

Some rooftops may be empty now… but the memories still soar.

Agar aap bhi Basant par kisi ko yaad kar rahy ho… toh aap akelay nahi ho. 💛

Because some memories are like kites…

kabhi haath se chhoot bhi jayein…
par dil ke aasman se kabhi nahi girti.
