Advice for Students Appearing in CSS 2024
Commence your revision process, even if you have covered only 60% of the syllabus across all subjects. Strengthen your comprehension by actively attempting past papers, avoiding reliance solely on reading notes. Simultaneously, embark on the revision of 2 to 3 books, crafting concise one-page notes for each, which can serve as a quick reference on the exam night.
Note: Attempt at least one question from the past paper on the topic you have revised.
TIME ALLOCATION FOR EACH QUESTION:
Dedicate 40 minutes to each question, strategically distributing this time as follows: spend 5 minutes on brainstorming and constructing a rough outline, allocate 4 minutes to the introduction, invest 22 minutes in developing body paragraphs, and allot 6 minutes to critical analysis (if required) and the conclusion. Reserve the final 3 minutes for a meticulous review of your paper. Use a pointer or marker to highlight crucial points overlooked earlier and correct spelling and grammar errors.
DETERMINING THE PAGE LENGTH FOR A QUESTION:
The recommended length for one question is 6 to 8 pages; however, customize this according to your writing style, speed, and the imperative of justifying your response in harmony with the question. This method not only facilitates effective time management but also cultivates and fortifies your writing skills, contributing to a robust state of preparedness.
Upon completion of your answers, actively seek feedback from your respective teacher or a senior. I trust that this advice will prove instrumental in enhancing your preparation.
Best of luck to all students of 2024!
Should we read newspapers at the beginning?
That is an intriguing question. However, I do not recommend that my students read newspapers at the beginning of their preparation. Here's why: opinions, articles, and editorials are authored by experienced and well-informed experts. Consequently, you cannot fully comprehend and effectively utilize this knowledge in your journey unless you possess a foundational understanding of the particular topic.
For example, if you were to read an article on the "Kashmir issue and the revocation of Article 370" without prior knowledge of the accession of Kashmir and the status of Kashmir in the Indian constitution before the revocation of Article 370 and 35A, you would struggle to grasp the article's contextual and historical significance.
Furthermore, reading such articles would primarily provide you with facts, figures, a few names, and the opportunity to expand your vocabulary with new English words. However, if you approach these articles after acquiring a comprehensive historical understanding of the Kashmir issue, the benefits would be far greater in opinion-building, critical thinking, and mature knowledge base analysis. In the CSS exam, examiners tend to focus on topics from the past 6 to 7 months.
Therefore, it is unnecessary to delve into newspaper reading at the outset, at least until you have completed your study of Pakistan Affairs. Additionally, there are specific methods for effectively reading newspapers, but it would be impractical to describe them here due to the length constraints of this note. If you have any inquiries, I recommend discussing them in person via messenger. Thank you.
