Simplifying RAID
RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is a storage technology that combines multiple hard drives or SSDs into a single logical unit.
Its main goals are to improve performance, ensure data redundancy, or both depending on the RAID level used. RAID can be implemented via hardware (dedicated controllers) or software (OS-level configurations).
Key RAID Types and Related Concepts
• Standalone: A single drive setup. No redundancy or performance enhancement simple and straightforward, but offers no fault tolerance.
• Cluster: A group of servers working together to provide redundancy, high availability, and load balancing. While not a RAID configuration itself, clusters are often used alongside RAID to protect against both hardware and system failures.
• Hot Swap: The ability to replace or add drives without powering down the system. Common in RAID systems to minimize downtime during drive failures or upgrades.
RAID Levels
• RAID 0 (Striping): Splits data across two or more drives for increased read/write speed. Offers no redundancy if one drive fails, all data is lost. Ideal for performance-focused setups where data loss is acceptable.
• RAID 1 (Mirroring): Duplicates the same data on two drives. Offers excellent fault tolerance if one drive fails, the other continues to function. However, usable storage is halved.
• RAID 5 (Striping with Parity): Stripes data across at least three drives, with parity information allowing for recovery from a single drive failure. Balances performance, storage efficiency, and fault tolerance.
• RAID 0+1 (Striped + Mirrored): Combines the speed of striping (RAID 0) with the redundancy of mirroring (RAID 1). Requires at least four drives. Provides both performance and protection, but loses more usable space than RAID 5.
RAID is widely used in both enterprise and home environments for data protection, server resilience, and faster access speeds. However, RAID is not a substitute for regular backups. Always pair RAID with a robust backup strategy.

🔌 Boost Your Networking Knowledge 🔌
Knowing your networking protocols and port numbers is essential, whether you're an IT pro, a student, or prepping for certifications like CCNA or CompTIA. Here's a handy cheat sheet to keep in your toolkit! 👇
📘 Common Networking Protocols & Their Ports:
🌐 HTTP – 80
🔒 HTTPS – 443
📂 FTP – 21 (Control), 20 (Data)
🔐 SFTP/SSH – 22
📧 SMTP – 25 | POP3 – 110 | IMAP – 143
🛡️ SMTPS/POP3S/IMAPS – 465/995/993 (Secure Mail)
📡 DNS – 53
🖥️ RDP – 3389
🕒 NTP – 123
📦 SNMP – 161
🗂️ LDAP/LDAPS – 389/636
🧰 MySQL/PostgreSQL/MSSQL – 3306/5432/1433
📃 Syslog – 514
📺 Telnet – 23 (Not secure, but still asked in interviews!)
📁 SMB/CIFS – 445
📻 NetBIOS—137–139
🌐 DHCP – 67/68
💡 Pro Tip: Secure protocols usually have higher port numbers (e.g., HTTPS > HTTP, IMAPS > IMAP).
