At 16:30 on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, two U.S. Navy warships carrying 10 armed Marines accidentally entered Iran’s territorial waters and were immediately detained by Iran.

After 16 hours, once it was confirmed that the two ships had unintentionally strayed into Iranian waters, they were released.

The American Marines apologized on the spot for their mistake; one of them was crying, and the female Marine put a scarf over her head to observe hijab.
