Sa tulong ng isang Marine Engineering student na nakakita sa insidente, agad nitong isinagawa ang cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), dahilan upang magkamalay ang mga bata.

Kasunod nito, muling nagpaalala ang mga awtoridad sa mga magulang at guardian na bantayang mabuti ang mga menor de edad habang naliligo sa dagat o swimming pool upang maiwasan ang kahalintulad na insidente. | Pinascope

Nanawagan ang Ateneo de Manila University sa publiko na iwasan ang cyberbullying, online harassment, at pagpapakalat ng hindi beripikadong impormasyon habang nagpapatuloy ang imbestigasyon sa pagkamatay ng student-athletes na sina Rene Clert Baterbonia at Divine Adili.

Binigyang-diin ng unibersidad ang kahalagahan ng responsableng paggamit ng social media at paggalang sa proseso ng imbestigasyon upang matiyak ang katarungan para sa mga nasawi.

Nagsampa na ang National Bureau of Investigation ng kasong qualified human trafficking laban kay dating kongresista na si Mike Defensor at kanyang asawang si Julie Defensor sa Pasig City Prosecutor’s Office.

Kaugnay ito ng umano’y ilegal na operasyon sa isang KTV bar at hotel kung saan mahigit 50 kababaihan ang pinaniniwalaang naging biktima ng human trafficking.

Itinanggi ni Defensor ang mga paratang at iginiit na ang kaso ay may bahid ng pulitika.

𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮 𝗠𝗩𝗣 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗼: 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁 “𝗕𝗼𝗯𝗲𝘁” 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮

Rene Clert Baterbonia was an 18-year-old rising basketball standout from Mindanao, widely regarded as one of the most promising prospects of his generation. His life and burgeoning career were tragically cut short on June 8, 2026, when he drowned alongside teammate Divine Adili during a pre-season team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. Prior to the incident, he had committed to play for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙
Baterbonia hailed from Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, and later moved to Davao City to pursue his studies and athletic career. He came from a family of nine and was a beneficiary of the government’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps). As the son of fish vendors, he embraced basketball as a means to uplift his family’s circumstances.

𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙧 𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨
Standing 6-foot-4, he earned the moniker “Gentle Giant” for his commanding presence in the paint, highlighted by strong defense, rebounding, and post play. He rose to national prominence after leading the Davao Region (DAVRAA) to its first-ever secondary boys’ basketball gold medal at the 2025 Palarong Pambansa in Laoag City. He delivered 19 points in the championship game, securing Most Valuable Player honors and a spot in the Mythical Five.

He also represented Ateneo de Davao University High School and contributed to the Philippine youth team’s gold medal finish at the ASEAN School Games.

𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙘 𝙋𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙇𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙘𝙮
On June 8, 2026, Baterbonia and Adili tragically drowned during a team activity in Aurora, prompting investigations by authorities, including the CIDG and NBI. The incident sparked nationwide mourning and renewed calls for stronger athlete safety measures and accountability in sports programs.
