Two photos, different stories.

1st photo: Random photos from different races taken by official photographers. This is our usual bonding moment before she races, helping her put on her gear, talking to her, reminding her to do her best, and most importantly, enjoy the race.

2nd photo: Someone took a photo of us inside a tent right after I changed Mayari’s outfit. The concern was asking who the “new members” were and why the child was being changed outside.

I understand that maybe the person who took the photo was just concerned, and I respect that. But I also want to explain our side.

This was the very first time I changed her in an open area in all the races we have joined (I honestly thought it would be okay because I had also seen a few other racers being changed inside tents), and as seen in the photo (I only added a red line to the photo to show that her top was actually long enough), she was never fully undressed. In this picture, I was already applying sunscreen on her arms and legs.

It was around 3:00 PM, and the heat from the sun was extremely intense. I chose not to go to the restroom anymore just to change her clothes. We had already been at the venue since 8:00 AM (we don’t have a car, and we can’t afford to book a room). I had no sleep, no one assisting me, and I was already suffering from a severe headache, making it difficult for me to even walk across to the restroom.

Right before this photo was taken, Mayari had jumped and accidentally hit her forehead on an iron bench, causing a large bump and making her feel dizzy. Because of that, I no longer wanted to make her walk all the way to the restroom just to change.

This was the first time I changed her outside, unfortunately, it was also photographed. Please know that I would never intentionally put my child in an uncomfortable or unsafe situation. In previous races, I would rather not change her outfit if I don’t have a proper place where she can change.

I can’t control how other people see us, but if what you saw was unpleasant to your eyes, imagine how painful it was for me as a mother to realize that someone secretly took a photo of us, called us “parang squatter,” and said that this kind of situation damages the image of the (former) team.

I understand the situation, and I am accountable for my part. What my child and I did does not constitute a crime. However, it is also important to recognize that taking our photo without consent was not appropriate. If you were truly concerned about Mayari and genuinely wanted to educate me, you could have approached me, corrected me kindly, or offered to help.

Mahirap lang kami, pero hindi kami masamang tao. I am simply a mother trying to get through that day while doing my best for my child. We never cheated in a race, hurt anyone, or brought others down in this pushbike community. We are simply here because my child loves to race, and we stayed because we believed this was a safe space for us too.

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers who wake up early, prepare packed meals for trainings and races, get everything ready for their children to wear and bring, condition and encourage their kids, stay at the starting gate, cheer while their child is on the racetrack, and wait at the finish line every single time.

You are doing an amazing job, and your love, patience, and support mean everything.
