PHIVOLCS WARNS OF POSSIBLE MAGNITUDE 8.2 EARTHQUAKES ALONG PH TRENCHES

Areas located along the Philippines’ six active ocean trenches could experience earthquakes of up to magnitude 8.2, according to PHIVOLCS Director Teresito Bacolcol.

The identified active trenches include the Philippine Trench, East Luzon Trough, Manila Trench, Negros Trench, Sulu Trench, and Cotabato Trench. The warning comes after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake generated by the Cotabato Trench that struck parts of Mindanao.

PHIVOLCS also reminded residents in coastal communities to be alert for natural tsunami warning signs, including strong ground shaking, a sudden rise or fall in sea level, and a roaring sound coming from the sea. Authorities advise immediate evacuation to higher ground if any of these signs are observed.
